Arriva Trains Wales insport Series 2017 a huge success

Disability Sport Wales held the Arriva Trains Wales Wheelchair insport Series for the fourteenth year this weekend (8th and 9th September) at Cardiff Met University, National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC) in Cyncoed.  Over 750 disabled people of all ages and ability levels attended to try over 25 sports with a range of adapted equipment on site.

The two day event was supported by local authorities across the South East Wales region, and offers children, young people and adults the opportunity to take part in a range of activities. Each day various sports were showcased, all run by club coaches. They include badminton, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, golf, wheelchair football, karate, wheelchair racing, and judo, plus many more.

The event is primarily aimed at physically disabled adults and children but everyone was welcome to attend. Designed to spot those who might have a burgeoning talent or those who simply want to take part in sport and have fun – there were sports to suit everyone of all ages and ability levels.  As well as having the opportunity to try the sports, participants also found out about clubs that they can join in their area.

This year Disability Sport Wales Community Partner Arriva Trains Wales is the principal sponsor alongside the Cardiff Bay Rotary Club who have been a charity partner of the event for the ninth year in a row, both organisations demonstrating huge commitment towards disability and inclusive sport.

James Nicholas of Arriva Trains Wales said “It’s been phenomenal to see so many young people from communities across Wales here today taking part and the range of sports on offer. We’re delighted to be able to support Disability Sport Wales and seeing the benefit of that investment in these brilliant young people is fantastic.”

Fiona Reid, new CEO to Disability Sport Wales said “the insport Series event in Cardiff has been a success story for the past 14 years, and it is thanks to key partners like Arriva Trains Wales, and the Rotary Club of Cardiff Bay, that we are able to deliver such an amazing event; to have 24 Governing Body partners providing opportunities to over 700 school-aged children and young people, and 150 members of the community is a real testament to the strengthening philosophy of inclusion within Welsh Sport.

This is one of a series of insport events across Wales, and provides opportunity for disabled children, young people and adults to come and access wide-ranging opportunity, and leave with greater experience knowledge, and confidence about what is out there in the local communities.  DSW remain committed to transforming lives, and the insport Series event in Cardiff is a great snapshot of how this happens”
